OBAMA THREATENS FREE SPEECH!

The website CNet is reporting internet companies and civil liberties groups are alarmed over a Senate bill that appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector telecommunications and internet networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency. A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the president’s power to take control of portions of the internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on September 11, 2001.

JAPAN THROWS OUT THE CONSERVATIVES!

Voters in Japan have ousted the conservative Liberal Democratic Party, ending fifty-five years of nearly uninterrupted rule. In elections on Sunday, the populist Democratic Party of Japan captured a record 308 of the 480 seats in the lower house of parliament. It was the worst election performance for the conservative Liberal Democratic Party since the party was founded in 1955. One analyst described the vote as a bloodless revolution, the first transfer of power from one party to another in postwar Japan. Democratic Party leader Yukio Hatoyama is expected to become Japan’s new prime minister. He is a longtime critic of Japan’s close relationship to the United States.

MAJOR ERROR ON THE MAX TICKET TRANSFERS! POLICY REMAINS UNCHANGED!

Al, I just posted this on the Yahoo page too. The text about trading in a MAX ticket for a transfer was a typo in the first printing of the Green Line pamphlet. It has been reprinted to say: "To transfer to a bus, just show the operator your validated MAX ticket as you board."

I talked with the Creative Services department to make sure this error doesn't appear anywhere else.

WOULD BE ROBBER AT BTC

The case: A would-be robber was prevented from holding up a man last month near the Beaverton Transit Center. Police said the hold up was averted by the efforts of officers, victims and a bicyclist who was passing by.

Jentre J. Hoffman, 23, was arrested after he tried to rob a Portland man. TriMet police were on patrol at the center and were drawn to the scene of the would-be robbery by the cries of a teenage girl who was walking with the robbery victim. Hoffman took off as police approached, but a passing cyclist knocked him to the ground, giving police enough time to make an arrest.

Update: On Aug. 10, Hoffman pleaded guilty to third-degree robbery.

What's next: He was sentenced to two years probation, and must complete courses for alcohol abuse, anger management and mental health. He was also ordered to have no contact with his victims.

TriMet has now established a clear, discriminatory policy regarding its passengers.

The first-class rail riders continue to receive freebies from the expensive MAX system with its large, sheltered platforms, Transit Tracker signs and a complete police force. The Portland Streetcar receives $3 million annually despite not being owned or operated by TriMet. The WES system costs $33 per boarding ride to help pay for the "free" wireless Internet and specifically denies ridership to anyone without a credit or debit card. And now, Fareless Square will be exclusive to streetcar and MAX riders.

The steerage-class bus rider is subjected to the oldest, dirtiest and most congested bus fleet on the West Coast where the majority of boarding locations lack sidewalks, shelters or any amenities besides a bus stop sign. One out of three buses lack air conditioning. Buses frequently don't show up on schedule or are so full they must pass up willing riders. And now, bus passengers must pay full fare downtown.

Portland is no longer the leader in transit innovation. Instead, it has established that bus riders are no longer worthy of quality transit, while rail service receives infinite attention and funding.

NEW BUS STOP SIGN WITH OLD LOGO?

Maybe they ran out of new ones and with the budget cuts and all must have had some left over old logo's available.

ROSS RACER UPDATE

Today was a busy day. We learned that the doctor was unable to get out all of the cancer from Wednesday's surgery. My mother is scheduled for a simple mastectomy on Monday morning.

That means she will have had 3 surgeries in 11 days!

Tonight we went to the viewing at the funeral home for my aunt.

The plan is for me to return to Portland on Friday Aug. 28.

RAIL FAIL

PORTLAND, Ore. -- MAX train service was disrupted Saturday after a collision in East Portland, according to TriMet.

An accident was reported involving a Blue Line train and a car at E. 197th Ave., TriMet spokesperson Bekki Witt said.

Service in both direction was expected to be disrupted for several hours Saturday afternoon.

Cities fight to avoid being left at station

“This transportation system is so beneficial to business,” said Beaverton Mayor Dennis Doyle, who hopes to build a new Triple-A baseball stadium for the Portland Beavers near a transit center in the heart of his city.

RAIL FAIL

A westbound Blue Line train experienced mechanical problems and is stuck in the Robertson Tunnel on the westside. Shuttle buses are carrying riders between the PGE Park station and Sunset Transit Center while the train is moved off the tracks. Riders on the westside and downtown may experience significant delays until service can be restored.

----------------------------------------------
MAX riders on the eastside should expect delays of about 10 minutes due to a broken down train being removed from the tracks.

ROSS RACER UPDATE

I changed my plane tickets today. I will be returning on Friday Aug. 28, which means I should be back to work on Monday Aug. 31.

I learned this morning that one of my aunts passed away last night. (My Mom's sister) Her funeral is on Saturday so I should be able to attend that.

Today the humidity dropped into the comfortable range.....finally! Oh my god!!! I'm turning into an Iowan, I'm talking about the weather!!!
