New MAX hurts bus riders
I cannot rejoice over the new MAX line from
First, TriMet cuts bus lines and frequency of service. My own line has been cut so much -- only running a few times each week day -- that it's essentially worthless. I now have to walk more than half a mile to catch a bus.
Then, TriMet downgraded the world-class transit mall by cutting the number of bus stops in half. Now, TriMet proposes to eliminate

MANAGEMENT SHAKEUP!
Date: July 1, 2009
To: Operations Division Employees; Business Forum
From: Peggy Hanson
Subject: Staff Announcements Within Transportation Operations
Steve Banta announced in April 2009 a process of evaluating every part of Operations to find areas
where we could do with less, and where we could do without. Given the required level of service and
staff reductions, Steve challenged all of us to seize the opportunity to approach our customers in a new,
refreshing and ultimately more effective way.
Effective July 1, 2009, Transportation Operations has a strong, yet streamlined management team in
place that is focused on our core service:
Jay Jackson
Manager
Hayden Talbot
Lyle Pereira
Dan Stokes
James Brown
Ruth Tillson
Ken Jenson
Greg Larson
Vic Kandle
GregoryDonavon
Robert Romo
Phil Davis
Jean Cook
Dan Stokes, formerly assistant manager rail transportation, will join Field Operations in the important
work of overseeing field supervision and fare inspection. Gregory Donavon, most recently an assistant
manager at
Elmonica to Ruby Junction, where he will support rail operators and the daily activities of Bus Dispatch
and Rail Control. Ruth Tillson and Robert Romo join the management team at
Cook will join the team at
I believe this offers an extraordinary opportunity to broaden the breadth and depth of our experience as a
transportation management team. I am also proud that we have been able to maintain our commitment to
minimizing the impact on our frontline employees.
Thank you.
STEVE BANTA TALKS ABOUT THE REDUCTIONS

Staffing changes and budget reductions reflect commitment to streamline management while minimizing impact on frontline employees.
7/6/09 Looking at the impact of the budget on Operations
Stephen R. Banta, Executive Director Operations
As you have heard from our general manager, TriMet is in the midst of unprecedented financial challenges that have resulted in service and staff reductions. In making the difficult decision to reduce service to the public, we committed to our riders and to our employees that we would do whatever possible to make reductions in areas that would minimally touch riders and employees. At this point we still have not had to lay off one represented employee, and we continue to hope that represented layoffs will be avoided through attrition.
In order to achieve that commitment, we have examined line items in every department of Operations to come up with targeted reductions in materials and services and the elimination of a number of open positions. There are open positions that we cannot do without, and you will see those posted in the future.
Additionally, some individuals accepted layoffs as part of our need to reduce administrative costs. For example, I am looking at how the Accessible Transportation Program can function without a director, and instead rely on clear communication and collaboration between managers in the department and my staff. A final decision will be made in the near future.
There have been reductions in overtime allotments in both maintenance and transportation. We will not be able to continue to over-expend our overtime budgets moving forward. An "all hands to the pump" attitude is required of each and every one of us to make this successful.
There has been a restructuring of Transportation Operations to better meet the needs of our riders and employees in this new financial environment. You can read more about the specific changes in Director of Transportation Peggy Hanson's memo. We are moving forward with a strong, yet streamlined management team consisting of only two assistant managers at each location. Their challenge is not doing more with less; rather, it is looking at how we can better support the delivery of our service to our customers. These changes offer opportunities for our staff to broaden their experience as a transportation management team.
I am confident that a shared commitment to the quality of our service will allow us to focus on meeting the challenges ahead.

KICKED OFF THE BUS
OPERATOR COMMENTS
Unfortunately, it was necessary for a driver to ask a disruptive group to get
off the bus recently. A family with a screaming child, seated directly behind
the driver, could not or would not quiet the child, or possibly move to the back
of the bus, away from the driver.
I have had screaming children on the bus and I don't like it. For me, it comes
down to a safety issue. Driving a bus safely requires a lot of focus. The safety
of the passengers rests on safely operating the bus, which demands maximum
focus, using all our senses to be aware of the ever changing conditions around
us and be ready to react, and loud noise, what ever the source is an impairment
to my focus and the safety of everyone.
Speaking of focus, with the many other truly important stories and issues facing
our community, why would KOIN give air time to something like this?
I don't often watch local news. It's largely shallow, low quality info-tainment,
tabloid journalism, long on drama and short on facts.
Mastercard Revokes Bush Personal Credit Card

NEW YORK (CAP) - Citing "grave concerns over the fiscal prudence of the cardholder," officials at MasterCard have announced that they are revoking President Bush's credit card.
"It's not a decision we ever like to make, particularly with someone this high profile," said a MasterCard spokesman. "But looking at the way this man has handled money over the past few years, we owe it to our shareholders to make a pre-emptive strike.

TRIMET HAS PLENTY $$$$ FOR COMPUTER RELATED STUFF!
Background
As most PC users are aware, Microsoft is continuously updating and patching their software products. They do this to fix bugs and security holes. Keeping our PCs and applications patched is important to the security of the information systems we use. So, when Microsoft announced that it would no longer be supporting, patching or fixing Office 2000, the IT department initiated a plan to upgrade that application suite.
Budget
Upgrades to major software like the operating system or the Office suite is budgeted years in advance. The expense of the current upgrade project was built into our budget over a year ago. Some might wonder if, in these challenging economic times, we should upgrade the Office suite. The answer is absolutely yes. The agency couldn’t go about its daily business without applications like Outlook, Word, Excel, and all the patches that keep them running and secure.
Features
The IT department has chosen to upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007. This is the most current version of the software suite we currently use, Office 2000. There are many improvements to the program features, and the most noticeable is probably the new user interface. You may want to visit the Microsoft Office website to check out their video tours of the software, and lots of other information.
